Sailing Around The World

Posted on: July 7, 2010 — Posted in: Evan rambles

I met someone recently who reminded me of how fortunate I am. An
accomplished singer/pianist/dancer/model “princess” of sorts spent
a considerable amount of time in her native NYC working towards being
the next “Celine Dion”. Thus working with producers on image and material,
showcasing to major record labels, -think American Idol style.

Most likely everyone has a different understanding of “being the
next,” so let me see if I can sum it up. Aiming to be the next “Celine”, or anyone for that matter, is a common big biz music industry
practice of creating a recognizable “product” (think commonality) in
order to sell, sell, sell. Playing this game for an artist, in a lot
of ways, is like going into a casino with the goal of “taking the
house.” For every artist that vies for this spot there are a million
that don’t make it and in her own words, she told me, “it was all or nothing at all.”

When it “didn’t happen” she packed up and left. And she hasn’t
performed/written/created since.

I’ve got nothing in common with someone like this because I can’t
imagine packing up and leaving. You could say my life has been the
flip opposite method (talking grassroots people). I play shows anywhere
and everywhere, make friends and fans one at a time and always enjoy
it.

As artists, inevitably, there are questions we can’t really answer:
Why we perform, why we thrive on creation and writing, why we pick it
up in the first place?

For me, it’s always been about these unanswerable questions and the
process, it’s not about fame or fortune, and it never was. It’s always
been about feeling good and having others feel the same way. And I’m
fortunate to have connected with so many people that are a part of it,
give to it, cherish what it is that I do.
So, perhaps while there are those out there who may pack up and leave,
I’ll be here, “sailing around the world,” and we’ll do it together.
