Evan Goodrow Band - Modern Soul

Modern Soul

1. Soulicious

Back in the day, Soul music lyrics were very straightforward. Testimony. Romance. Promise. And, they still are. This song is an extension of motown feel good music.

Lyrics

1. Soulicious

Most Women Have An Agenda
But Don't Worry Ladies
Because Men Are Twice As Bad

Chorus:
I've Been Traveling The World Of Romance
Now I Got Something
And It's Like Nothing I've Ever Had
Your Kiss Is Soulicious
You Know That You Make Me Wonder
Just What I've Been Missin
All That Love I Had Before
Ain't No Comparing To Your Kissin
And You Say That You're Capable
Of Loving Me
I've Got No Reason To Doubt You Babe
Or What My Eyes Can See

Chorus:
I've Been Traveling The World Of Romance
Now I Got Something
And It's Like Nothing I've Ever Had
Your Kiss Is Soulicious

Musical Notes:
There's a lot of "part playing" going on here, meaning that the instruments are doing separate things that all meet somewhere in the middle. Motown, soul, and especially funk, are rooted in part playing. Listen to some of the James Brown funk records and it's not uncommon to hear a guitar playing one part, over and over again, for 7 or even 8 minutes.

2. Wacha Gonna Do?

This is my favorite cut off of "Modern Soul Vol. 1." I dig the chorus, I dig the groove, and I especially enjoy the bridge. But enough about the music, let me talk about the lyrics. "Watcha gonna do" is about someone who has a regret. And, we all know about regrets, right? So, I think there's a remedy to regret, and that would be to amend to yourself not to repeat the "mistake," or "error." Sounds simple right? Of course, sometimes it's too late, and sometimes it's not. You just have to decide that one for yourself.

Lyrics

2. Wacha Gonna Do?

Hey Baby You Got A Lot Of Nerve
We Both Know Just Who Left Who

Now You Got The Bright Idea
Like A Year Hasn't Passed Since You Gave Up On Me
We Both Know Just Who Wakes Up In The Middle Of The Night
And You Don't Know What To Do

Watcha Gonna Do
Watcha Gonna Do
When You Realize Babe
That You Threw Away
The Only Thing That Was Good For You?

Hey Baby Watcha You Want From Me Now?
We Both Know You Can Never Go Back, Never Go Back Again
Roll Away, Move Yourself On
I Would Tell You But You Know
Deep Down Inside I Don't Think That I'm That Strong

Now You Got The Bright Idea
That A Year Hasn't Passed Since You Gave Up On Me
We Both Know Just Who Wakes Up In The Middle Of The Night
And You Don't Know What To Do

Chorus:
There Was A Difference
There Was A Difference Between You And I
I Never Said I Had All The Answers
But At Least I Tried To Keep You Here By My Side

Musical Notes:
I get accused of using certain chords redundantly in a lot of my songwrtiting. And a few of those chords make an appearance here. There's the Dominant 7 #5, along with the typical Dominant (9) chords. And of course, can't forget the major 7ths. What can I say? I just get off using what might be considered today as "exotic jazz chords" in a pop/dance vein of music. I'm going to post a full chart of this one soon for all you chord players out there.

3. Love Doesn't Lie

A fan described this song to me as: "Late night baby making music." Carl always referred to it as "Glass of wine" (he was enthusiastic about the second verse). I guess everyone's got their own name for this one. This one captures my serious/playful chemistry that is a major part of my character. I like the promise, the hint of self sacrifice, and the confession of the whole thing. "Loving you was the only thing that was ever good for me."

Lyrics

3. Love Doesn't Lie

If No One Cares To Love You
I Say Baby I Can Do It
I Promise You
I'll Never Leave You When You Need Me
I Won't Go To Pieces

I'll Stand In The Fire Till I Fill Your Desire
I'll Stand In The Fire Till I Fill Your Desire

Baby Maybe You Fell Like A Glass Of Wine?
I Keep Some Here For You All The Time

Ain't No Need For You To Try
Because Loving You Was The Only Thing
That Was Ever Good For Me

Love Doesn't Lie I'm With You All The Time
Love Doesn't Need To Try
No Need To Change Something So Fine

I'll Stand In The Fire Till I Fill Your Desire
I'll Stand In The Fire Till I Fill Your Desire

4. I Don't Want To Know

I find that people enter romantic relationships with a plan, or an agenda. And, I think a general unawareness of such things, is often the primary reason for break-ups. Too often, couples have different agendas. You could say that "I don't want to know" explores this. The side of us that doesn't want to know what the other is planning. The side of us that wants to hide from the light. ("Sometimes it's easier hiding from the light"). I think everyone's been in the position.

Lyrics

4. I Don't Want To Know

I'm Sitting Baby,
Sittin In This Dark House
I'm Waiting Baby,
Waiting For Your Headlights
Sometimes It's Easier
Hiding From The Light

And There's Words That You Want To Hear
But You Don't Want Me To Hear Me Say Them
It's Not The Game That We Play
It's Each Other That We're Playing
Feels Like I'm Floating On A Sea

I Don't Want To Know
What Your Plan Is
I Don't Want To Know
Just How Far The Land Is

You Say That You Love Me
That's Right You Said It
But The Way It Sounds Baby
Just Like You Read It
And If You Mean All The Words That You Say
Because It's Not About Yesterday Or Tomorrow
It's All About Today

And There's Words That You Want To Hear
But You Don't Want Me To Hear Me Say Them
It's Not The Game That We Play
It's Each Other That We're Playing
Feels Like I'm Floating On A Sea

I Don't Want To Know
What Your Plan Is
I Don't Want To Know
Just How Far The Land Is

5. Hard To Handle

Great songs really are timeless. As a teenager I first heard the Black Crowes do this on MTV (remember the lead singer Chris putting his face in the camera for the chorus?). Then I went back and discover the original Otis Redding version. That was the real thing. So, I wanted to put my own spin on this one. For those of you who might be new to my music, I would note, that I'm constantly fiddling with completely different arrangements for cover tunes. As a writer, I spent a lot of time learning others material (basically playing a lot of covers, and from a lot of different genres) in order to familiarize myself with what had and hadn't been done. And, in my opinion, I think it's a much greater thing to "cover" a song and put your own stamp on it, creatively speaking of course.

Seeing as this is a cover of an Otis Redding song, (yes, the black crowes used it as well to "break into" mainstream MTV), I would need permission from the author/authors to reprint lyrics here. So, if you need the lyrics, I would suggest just googling it.

Evan Goodrow Band - A Night at the Bazbar

A Night at the Bazbar

1. When I Come Back to You

I'm constantly fidgeting with songs that I write. Even after I've "put them out there," I still toy with them, looking for different arrangements, sometimes changing them completely. While I still enjoy the lone solo acoustic version of "When I come back to you" on "24," I think that this is, by far, a superior arrangement. Like I say in the beginning, "We're going to play a little soul music for you," and I think we did. The crowds reacted to this one, and I was just happy to have a spot in the middle to solo! Saxophone player Tim Mayer just kills the ending.

Lyrics

1. When I Come Back to You

I Know You Come To See Me Go Away
But Baby I Know Things Will Be Ok

Leaving Each Other
When Theres
So Much
Left To Say
Baby I Know Things Will Be Ok

And If You Find I'm Never Far From Your Mind
Just Remember I'm Not So Far Away From You

I'll Always Love You
The Truth Will Always Feel Like New
When Spoken On These Lips
When I Come Back To You

When I Come Back To You

And If You Find Im Never Far From Your Mind
Just Remember Im Not So Far Away From You

I'll Always Love You
The Truth Will Always Feel Like New
When Spoken On These Lips
When I Come Back To You

Musical Notes
One of my big motivators for writing this one was that I'm just so sick of hearing ballads that are written with triads (that's simple major and minor chords). And so, there's some ccomplex chord harmonies in this one, including the infamous minor 7th augmented chord (one of my favorites, thanks you Donald Fagen!). I plan to post a chart of it soon for anyone who's trying to "figure out" those complex chords.

2. Nothing I Can Do

Originally, I was going to record this one with the full band (maybe on Modern Soul) and it got lost in the shuffle. Well, it's back. I especially like Tim's distracting yell in the beginning (listen for it).

The Lost Take
We had two competing versions of this song that may have or may have not made it on the CD (meaning that we had gotten two really good live takes). The other version was a bit more funky but at the very end a drunk patron tripped and fell right into the drum set, effectively halting the final moments, and so, the decision to use this take was made for us (thank you Mr. I had to much to drink, wherever you might be). The other version is on the acoustic disc "Songs that will never make it to radio."

Lyrics

2. Nothing I Can Do

Don't Know What To Do These Feelings Hard To Explain
To You
Suppose Theres Nothing I Can Say
Seems Our Love Just Got Up One Day And Walked Away

Chorus:
And Theres Nothing I Can Do If I Still Love You
Cant Find A Piece Of Mind Worth Running Too

People Still Talking About Us Used To Seeing Us Together
Do You Remember?
Driving Together, New England Weather
Never Stopped Us Once

Chorus:
And Theres Nothing I Can Do If I Still Love You
Cant Find A Piece Of Mind Worth Running Too

Bridge:
And If I Said I Don't Want To Give Up
Would You Turn Back On Me
Sometimes I Wish We Could Have Kept On Driving

3. I Can See

I've decided I'm going to record a version of this song on every record I ever make. (just kidding). No, really, don't worry.

Lyrics

3. I Can See

Loving Eyes They Hypnotize Pick Me Up And I Forget About The Floor
Dont Wisper Dreams But Say Them Loud Dancefloor Is Still
There For Those Who Want More

Hey Baby You're Looking So Good
And Now Its Time
For You And Me To Get Together

I Can See The Way Its Meant To Be You Call It Serendipity
But It's A Decision
Just Like A
Lost Language No One Speaks
Something Inside You Tells You
That You Can Touch The Sky
Hey Babe Your'e Looking So Fine
Now Its Time For Yo And Me To Put The Pieces Together

I Can See For Miles Around Me
I Can Know Just What You Feel In Your Heart
I Can See The Way It's Meant To Be
True Love Is Deep
True Love Is Deeper Than The Ocean
I Can Look Into The Future Of The Future
And Still Be Lost In The Mystery
I Still Get Lost
I Still Get Lost

Light A Candle Show The Way Look Around But Try Not To Look Down
You Tightrope Walk Your Way Through Something
The Your'e Most Precious Moment And It Dont Mean Nothing

I Dont Know Why You Deny
The Dancefloor Of Your Life
When It Longs To Have You Back

4. Whatever Gets You

Slow blues. I've always been in love with slow blues ballads, Ray Charles style. "Whatever gets you through the night" was written on the piano, and at 4 in the morning after a gig. I had come home, and was quite wired. I just couldn't sleep. I was both nostalgic and yearning for someone from my past, and simultaneously anxious about the future (not the best place to be in, especially when you really need to rest). I remember thinking about what we sometimes have to tell ourselves to "get though it" : a loss, a disappointment, or even a death. And so I hopped on the piano. I guess I could have titled it "waking the neighbors." No, I'm just kidding, I didn't wake anyone (or at least that I know about).

So there I am, at 4 in the morning, running the chord changes and sort of mumbling the melody over it, working it out in real time, and I remember thinking about all the titans of songwriting (the Duke Ellingtons, the Cole Porters, the Burt Bacharachs). I thought about how they all had sat at the piano working out music in their heads, finding words and chords to go together that made sense to human beings. And then I found myself staring at my reflection in the black finish of the piano, and listening to the birds outside. I hadn't played in half hour. I scribbled the lyrics down (lest I forget them, because it does happen) and raced off to my pillow.

Lyrics

4. Whatever Gets You

Whatever Gets You Through The Night
Until Tomorrow Baby
If You Say It's Right
I've Got To Believe You

I Only Want To Know
What's On Your Mind
I Say Baby I've Got A Feelin That It's Me

Whatever Gets You Through The Night
Until Tomorrow Baby
If You Let Me In
I'll Be The Best Lover You've Ever Had

I Only Want To Know
If There's Someone On Your Mind
I Say Baby I've Got A Feelin That It's Me

And You Say
Baby That I'm No Good
And Don't Know
You Tell Me That I'd Leave You If I Could
Now It's Ok
If You Have To Tell Yourself A Lie
You Said Baby
It's Better Than Loving Me

Whatever Gets You Through The Night
Until Tomorrow Baby
If You Say It's Right
I've Got To Believe You

I Only Want To Know
What's On Your Mind
I Say Baby I've Got A Feelin That It's Me

5. Get Back

I think this is one of the most hopeful set of lyrics I've ever written. It's both nostalgic and a sort of call to action involving the future. The chorus is a kind of precautionary (standing in the track of a runaway train), while it leaves you with a message: pick your head up (be proud of all the good you've done). Maybe I should have just title it "Pro-active positivity 101." Check out my "Yeah baby" after the first few bars of the sax solo! (I didn't know the recording mics would pick THAT up!)

Lyrics

5. Get Back

Woke Up This Morning
And My Whole Life Had Changed
I Was Feeling A Little Lovesick Baby
For The Early Days
Everyone's Got A Lifeline
They Can Hold Onto When The Sea

Gets Rough Again
But Could You Tell Me Baby,
What Kind Of Trouble You Might Be In?

Cause I'll Believe In You If You Think I Could
And If I Asked You To Do The Same For Me I Know You Would (Know You Would)

Chorus
Get Back Standing In The Track Of A Runaway Train
Still Enough Time To Turn Your World On A Dime
Get Back Stand Real Tall
Remember Be Proud Of All The Good You've Done

Positive Vibration Is All You Need
That's What Mr. Bob Marley Gave To Me
Because Feeling Lovesick
Might Bring You Down
You Got To Do What You Can To Pick Yourself Up Off The Ground

Cause I'll Believe In You If You Think I Could
And If I Asked You To Do The Same For Me
I Know You Would

Chorus
Stand Back

Musical Notes
I am a Steely Dan fan. No, let me put that differently. I'm a Steely Dan "nut." There was a period for a year that I was constantly listening to the ten or so recordings that they made. When I listen to this one, I hear the Dan. The chords, the dotted quarter note rhythms on the chorus, and maybe even the lyrics. Now, if only I had titled it something like..."Mr. Bob Marley" well then, that might be a bit too much.

6. Let's Get It On

Ahhh, Marvin Gaye. How can you lose?

You may hear a lot of background club sound on this one, but what you can't hear is the couples who were slow dancing on the entire dance-floor (they're a bit quiet), so what you're hearing is the people "behind" the dancers. (Yeah, it was a big crowd). I especially enjoy saxophone player Tim Mayer's dedication: "Now's the time to grab someone you love, or someone you think you might be able to love!"

Due to legalities, I can't post the lyrics here, although I would suggest just googling them: (try the artist along with the title of the song).

7. I Don't Want To Know

Live, and with a brighter tempo, I would use this one to kick off the night, and it always seemed to work really well. I especially like how this one is "blues style" without being a "blues tune." Maybe Bonnie Raitt would record it someday. That would be cool with me!

This song tells the story of a conversation that's going to happen. And it's deep. I was really trying to explore the unspoken motives in relationships and how they might ultimately be able to defeat us. I think that sometimes, when we come full circle in a relationship, and really understand motives, it can be so difficult to let go, and forgive, and ultimately realize, that perhaps we were choosing not to "listen" (I don't want to know) to some of the evidence that may have been right in front of us.

Ok, too much? Oh, alright, just listen to the damn thing.

Lyrics

7. I Don't Want To Know

I'm Sitting Baby,
Sittin In This Dark House
I'm Waiting Baby,
Waiting For Your Headlights
Sometimes It's Easier

8. C Minor Groove

You all know that I screw around with my own tunes. The music behind the lyrics in this re-working version was actually from a new song I had been working, and I just couldn't get things to line up (on the work-in-progress). I had been in St. Barths for about a week and hadn't been in the least bit productive writing wise, and was feeling lethargic.

One night, right before the evening performance I showed the bass and drum figure to the guys, and later on that night when I went to sing the lyrics to the new song, I couldn't remember the first verse (this commonly happens when you're simultaneously writing and trying to memorize it at the same time). Stuck in the groove with a memory black out of the tune, I found myself singing the first verse of C minor groove. I improvised the verse breaks next time around and the chorus melodies on the spot, and behold, the band was slapping me on the back at the end of the night for it. So, I didn't tell them. Until now!

Lyrics

Ray Charles is one of the greatest musical influences I've ever had in my life. This one's for him.

Due to legalities, I can't post the lyrics here, although I would suggest just googling them: (try the artist along with the title of the song).

EGB Live (Opening for Peter Frampton)

1. Girls Dance With Girls

Always a crowd pleaser, this was a fun way to play in the North Shore music theater. The stage rotates clockwise (rather slowly) but still, you can imagine, we were moving!

Lyrics

1. Girls Dance With Girls

When I Ask You To Dance Baby Don't Say No
Night's Still Young We Got A Way To Go

Get Up Get Down Babe On The Floor
Turn Your Heels Come Back For More

Cut It Loose You Got What Other Girls Want
Band Gets Together Just To Play Your Parts Yeah

Don't Ask Me If Your Mans Around
I'll Drive All Night Just To See You Get Down

Chorus
It's Ok, For Girls To Dance With Girls
Now It's Ok For Girls To Dance With Girls

Guys It's Pretty Clear You Don't Understand
Girls Just Want To Dance Anyway They Can

Darwin Said Nature Finds A Way
Girls Take It On The Dance Floor Today

Guys You Seem A Little To Shy
Better Get Moving Before You're Left Behind

I'm The Man With The Plan Make You Understand
I Want To Make You Dance Anyway I Can

Chorus
It's Ok, For Girls To Dance With Girls
Now It's Ok For Girls To Dance With Girls

2. It's Probably Me

Of all the covers that the band does live, we get asked to do this one more than any other. I just think it's such a great example of what a master songwriter Sting is, and I'm still hoping that someday he gets a chance to hear this arrangement (I'd love to see his reaction).

Once again, lyric permission rights for reprinting have not been secured. If you want the lyrics I'd suggest that you just google them.

3. You You You

A fan once told me how fun this one is. Who am I to argue?

Lyrics

3. You You You

Ive Been Stuck Here On The Phone
And I Know Your Feeling Alone
I Won't Let You Down
I'll Listen To You All Night Long

Ive Been Trying To Get It Right
And At The End Of Every Night
The Tears Fall From My Face
And They Show Me The Way To Go Home

You You You
You You You
We Got A Lot In Common
We Don't Know
Whats Going To Happen Tomorrow

You You You
You You You You Keep On Singing
You Give Your Dreams A Chance
You Give Them A Chance To Run Free

Ive Been With You Baby And I've Been Alone
Black And White
Right And Wrong
And I'll Still Be Here To Tell The Story
Even When The Time Has Gone

I Thought I Was Someone Else
Until You Turned Around
Showed Me Myself
And I'm Grateful Grateful Grateful Baby
I'm Telling Everyone About You

You You You
You You You
We Got A Lot In Common
We Don't Know
Whats Going To Happen Tomorrow

You You You
You You You You Keep On Singing
You Give Your Dreams A Chance
You Give Them A Chance To Run Free

4. Find My Way Back Home

The version of this song is probably the highlight of the record for EGB fans who really, really dig the blues. It's indicator of what all my records might have sounded like if I had just played blues. Perhaps I would have been known as a proper "blues artist," or maybe even tried to steal a title here or there. But, of course, if you know me by now, you know that after diving into so many styles (blues, acoustic, jazz, and did someone mention soul/motown/dance?) then you know that I'm not a traditionalist by any means. In fact, I'm quite against traditionalism in any form of art. Now, it's important to clarify lest I be misunderstood.

I think that learning and following the genres before you is most important, but the next step is to actually "do" something with it. And, when you "do" or "add" something to it, it's then that it's no longer traditional, and could quite possibly be considered original. Ok, did Iose you? Alright, I'll stop. Check out the lyrics.

Lyrics

4. Find My Way Back Home

Time For Loving Is The Right Time
Make Sure You're Looking For Me Honey
Calling Out Your Name As I Drive Over The Hills
I'm Coming Home And I'm Bringing You All My Magic Thrills
I'm Going To Find My Way Back Home

Baby, Its Been A Long Time
And Your Looking Finer All The Time
If Your Love Is Good For Me, Then I'll Be Good To You
We'll Show The Neighbors Just What Love Can Do
When I Find My Way Back Home

I Know You'll Be Missing Me When Im Gone
Here I Come My Headlights Are Pointed Towards Home
Nothing Like A Little Blues Music To Make You Feel Alright
I Got What It Take To Rock You Through The Night
Im Going To Find My Way Back Home

5. Sexy Lady

The drum intro that Phil does on this has become a mainstay introduction in the live show. It's good because it gives me chance to introduce the band, and for those who haven't seen the live show in awhile don't know what's coming. All in all, a good song to end the set. I also like the way we kick back into it.

Lyrics

5. Sexy Lady

Summertime Has Come Again
Time To Make Some Memories
Baby I Love To Remember When
The Heat It Feels So Good Honey When It Settles In
I'd Like To Run Naked Through Your Streets
Calling Out Your Name Baby So Everyone Can Hear Oh Yeah

Chorus
Sexy Lady
Let Me Take You Downtown
We'll Dance To Hip Hop Till That Night Turns Itself Around
Yeah Yeah Yeah
I Want To Show You
Sexy Lady You've Got My Love Too

Don't Even Need A Reason Why
We All Came Here Tonight To Have A Good Time
It's A Hearty Party We Like To Throw
Come On Boys Callin' All The Sexy Girls You Know

I'd Like To Run Naked Through Your Streets
Calling Out Your Name Baby So Everyone Can Hear Oh Yeah

Chorus
Sexy Lady
Let Me Take You Downtown
We'll Dance To Hip Hop Till That Night Turns Itself Around
Yeah Yeah Yeah
I Want To Show You
Sexy Lady You've Got My Love Too

Repeat Chorus
You've Got My Love Too

Evan Goodrow Band - Songs That Will Never Make the Radio

Songs That Will Never Make the Radio

1. Nothing I Can Do

I started writing "Nothing I can do" years before it was finished. It was one of those songs that always seemed to be a work in progress. And I went in circles with it. Sometimes it seemed it wouldn't be much better (probably one of the reasons it didn't come out on an earlier recording), and then I would go back, change this, change that. Can't say I was happy with it. It would be a generalization, but I'll make it. I've always been resistant to the nostalgic, helpless love song. And this is about as far as I'm going down this road. I can only hope that the relationship observations bring some compassion and empathy to those listening. And, maybe a bit of insight right? Sometimes I wish we could have kept on driving...

Lyrics

1. Nothing I Can Do

Don't Know What To Do These Feelings Hard To Explain
To You
Suppose Theres Nothing I Can Say
Seems Our Love Just Got Up One Day And Walked Away

Chorus
And Theres Nothing I Can Do If I Still Love You
Cant Find A Piece Of Mind Worth Running Too

People Still Talking About Us Used To Seeing Us Together
Do You Remember?
Driving Together, New England Weather
Never Stopped Us Once

Chorus
And Theres Nothing I Can Do If I Still Love You
Cant Find A Piece Of Mind Worth Running Too

Bridge
And If I Said I Don't Want To Give Up
Would You Turn Back On Me
Sometimes I Wish We Could Have Kept On Driving

2. My Life Is Mine

"I swear by my life, and my love of it, I will never life my life for another man, and never ask him to do the same for me." Ayn Rand.

This is one of my favorite quotes (from one of my favorite authors) and the song is written in it's like. The greatest manifestation of love that you can generate for another is the hope and desire that THEY are ultimately joyful, no matter what the consequences of our relationship to them. When you look in their eyes and tell them that their life is theirs and belongs to them. This is empowerment. There's also an eternal element to this song as well. "Find you again" could be a notion towards an eternal afterlife.

You see me standing next to you for all time
(You see me standing in a place where I can't be)
But when I look in your eyes I know that my life is mine
(You want me to stay, but you know that I can't, so you don't ask me, because you love me that much)

Lyrics

2. My Life Is Mine

This Might Be The Last Time We See Each Other
Feels Like I'm Standing Baby On The Edge Of A Brand New Soul
And I Want This To Be A New Beginning And Not A Tragic End
What Would I Have To Do To Assure You Baby
That Someday I'd Find You Again

You See Me Standing Next To You For All Time
But When I Look In Your Eyes I Know That My Life Is Mine
And We've Only Got So Much Time

You Smile At Me But You Have Tears In Your Eyes
And Anyone Who Sees Us Together
Could Tell That We In Love
I Want This To Be A New Beginning And Not A Tragic End
What Would I Have To Do To Assure You
That Someday I'll Find You Again

3. Hallelujah I Love Her So

Ray Charles influence on me speaks for itself. Anyone who has seen me perform any of his songs will know right off the bat that not only am I a huge fan, but that I really "feel" his music and cherish it deeply.

Although I performed "Hallelujah" with the full band for a few years now I thought this acoustic project would be a great time and place to "dig in." By playing it "scaled down" without a band, you really get to feel the new driving rhythm that's here, as well as the joyful vocal that sort of surfs "on" the song. I hope you enjoy it!

Once again, lyric permission rights for reprinting have not been secured. If you want the lyrics I'd suggest that you just google them.

4. When You're Gone

I started writing this song before I was 20. It had some really lame titles to it (that will go unprinted here). I had three different working versions before this one. There were different lyrics, different choruses. For awhile it just became a template for "how's Evan feeling lately?" If I was getting into something with a lady, it was quite upbeat, and if I was leaving it was sad. It was always like that.

Finally, I amended to "find" a final version. So, I set out the lyrics I wanted and read them out loud a few hundred times until I found the problems with them, and so then "economized" them by trimming the fat (that's probably is a very concise 3:33). In the end, I'm still happy with it. And the first verse says everything that needs to be said about love.

Lyrics

4. When You're Gone

The Moment You Fall In Love
There's Nothing You Can Do
And Time Stands Still And The Only Time You Feel At Ease
Is When She's Standing Next To You

I've Got A Beating Heart
And You Know I Don't Always Understand It
Sometimes It Cries Out For You
But It's Always Silent
When You're Gone

It's Become Very Clear To Me
That I'm Not The Man I Used To Be
My Passage Is Broken In Two
Everything That Came Before
Then Everything After You
And When I Close My Eyes I See You There Standing

And You're So Real
My Heart Cries Again But It's Always Silent
When You're Gone

I've Got A Beating Heart
But I Don't Always Understand It
Sometimes It Cries Out For You
But It's Always Silent
When You're Gone

Musical notes
People have asked me for a transcription of this catchy guitar lick, and I promise I will deliver one. That is, when I'm done with all this blog writing.

5. Middle Street

Middle st. was indeed written for a women who tore my heart out. She tore it from my chest and she walked all up and down middle st with it on her show. Ok. take a second. laugh. It's not her fault because I let her do it. I gave it all, and in some ways foolishly. It was very, very romantic.

Love at first sight really does happen. It's real. These lyrics explain the situation pretty straight. Most of you ask...where is this street? This "Middle St." is indeed in Lowell Massachusetts (those of you catching up on Evanlore may not know that I spent some formative college years in Lowell even though rumours of me being "born on the Merrimac" are entirely ficticious).

Back to the story. Our love was forbidden for many reasons which I won't go into here (it would take too long, and besides, I have to keep something for my upcoming 1298 page biography). And so, we had to hide it.

"It's 3 oclock in the morning and I'd do anything to take you home. But this street is where we meet, and it's where we're going to stay, because we can't tell the world what's going on." Car sex anyone?

Lyrics

5. Middle Street

From The Beginning I Had Eyes For You
You Were Waitressing At A Cafe On Middle St.
And I Meant Well (Yes I Did)
But I Wanted You All To Myself
And I Knew One Day You Would Up Yourself And Fly Away
But You Left Me There Standing With A Tear In My Eye

I Found Love On Middle St.

You Ask Me If
We Could Stay On This Street For Just A Little While
But The Longer That We Stay The Less Likely We Can Leave
Well It's Three Oclock In The Morning
Girl I'd Do Anythng To Bring You Home
But This Street Is Where We Meet
I Said Baby It's Where We're Going To Stay
Because We Can't Tell The World What's Going On

I Found Love On Middle St.

You Got Your Life To Live
I've Got This Song To Give
But We Can Both Stay On This Street For Just A Little While

I Found A Love On Middle St.

6. Somebody New

I've always been a fan of Brazilian music. I can still remember listening to the Bossa Nova of Stan Getz and Astrud Gilberto. Later, when I was in my guitar schooling years, I dabbled for a few months with a classical guitar, and of course, rather than playing anything that was remotely classical, I spent my time playing with the right hand rhythms that can be made using just one or two chords. Later, while traveling in Argentina, I came across a classical guitar that I had to buy. And I amended that I would record "something" with it, and someday.

So, this is it. In some ways, this song is an excellent "step out" of style for the entire recording, and I still think it just stands on it's own. If there's anyone who would like to hear more latin influence in any of the stuff I've written, I suggest checking out "Black bra" on Gettup.

Lyrics

6. Somebody New

I Had A A Girl
She Was Brighter Than The Sun
She Looked At Me
She Told Me That I Was The Only One
But It's All Over Now
I Knew It When She Told Me How
She Had Found Somebody New

I Remember Her Hair
The Way She Would Sit And Stare At Me
On Sunday Morning
She Was Surprised
When I Looked In Her Eyes
And I Told Her That I Loved Her

But It's All Over Now
I Knew It When She Told Me How
She Had Found Somebody New

7. Come A Little Bit Closer

Lyrics

7. Come A Little Bit Closer

I Don't Know What Your Mama Told You
About Guys Like Me
She's Been Saying
I've Been Playing Games With Your Heart
And These Feelings Make You High And When You're High You Never Want To Come Down So Low
They've Been Saying
I've Been Taking You For A Ride

Come A Little Bit Closer
So I Can Feel You Next To Me

You Don't Have To Criticize
All I Want You To Do Is To Please Recognize

If I Burn For You
One Day You Might Burn For Me
And These Feelings Make You High And When You're High You Never Want To Come Down So Low
They've Been Saying
I've Been Taking You For A Ride

Come A Little Bit Closer
So I Can Feel You Next To Me

8. It's My Own Fault

When Rick and I performed t"It's my own fault" on Boston University television, the crew somehow lost the titles to the few songs that we played. And so, long after we were gone, and in post-production of the show they titled the song "Blindsided." The funny part was that I remember seeing the video over the internet and the title "Blindsided, performed by Evan Goodrow" and saying to myself, I wrote a song with the word blindsided in it? Well, I got a good laugh.

Favorite line: "Now I'm an emotional creature and I won't stand for none of your shit"

Lyrics

8. It's My Own Fault

When I Ask You What Your Doing You Say That You Don't What Your Doing To Me
You Treat Me Like A Fool And
And You Expect Me To Take It Lightly

It's My Own Fault
It's My Own Fault For Loving You Yeah
It's My Own Fault Baby
And Everything I Said Was True
I Got So Blindsided By You

You Got Something To Say
I Think You Said Enough Today
You Show Me Pretty Pictures
But The Whole Time You Take My Love
You Throw It Away

Now I'm An Emotional Creature And I Won't Stand For None Of Your Shit

It's My Own Fault
It's My Own Fault For Loving You Yeah
It's My Own Fault Baby
And Everything I Said Was True
I Got So Blindsided By You

And If I Had Another Chance
I Would Do It All So Differently

It's My Own Fault
It's My Own Fault For Loving You Yeah
It's My Own Fault Baby
And Everything I Said Was True
I Got So Blindsided By You

9. Stay Close To Me

Lyrics

9. Stay Close To Me

Ever Feel Like No One Knows You?
Ever Feel Like You Might Be Alone On This Earth?

I Find It Hard To Understand Us
Sometimes I Feel You Near
Sometimes We're So Far Apart Yeah

Stay Close To Me
Because Tomorrow Is Coming
Stay Close To Me
I Want To Remember You Like This

Every Wonder What Might Happen?
To Our Lives Someday When We Get Old
Will We Live In Self-Made Fiction?
Will We Be Left Out In The Cold?

Ever Feel Like No Ones Needs You?
Like You Could Disappear And Be Forever Gone
No One Takes Notice Of Your Absence
Who'll Be There To Sing Your Song?

Stay Close To Me
Because Tomorrow Is Coming

Stay Close To Me
I Want To Remember You Like This

10. I Can See

After a show, at a late night party with some friends and fans, someone handed me an acoustic guitar and asked me to play this song for them (it was their favorite song on "FLY" and the 15 minute version we had dished them out in the packed club just hours earlier, well I guess it wasn't enough ha!). So, Rick found a guitar, and away we went, in the kitchen, at 4am, on a quest to wake sleeping neighbors. When we finished, someone said "I wish we recorded that." So, here you are.

Lyrics

10. I Can See

Your Loving Eyes They Hypnotize
They Pick Me Up And I Forget About The Floor
Dont Wisper Dreams But Say Them Loud
The Dancefloor Is Still There
For Those Who Want More

Hey Baby You're Looking So Good
Now It's Time For You And Me To Get Together

I Can See The Way It's Meant To Be
You Call It Serendipity
But It's A Decision
Just Like A Lost Language No One Speaks
Something Inside You Tells You That You Can Touch The Sky
Hey Baby You're Looking So Fine
Now It's Time For You And Me To Put The Pieces Together

I Can See For Miles Around Me
I Can Know Just What You Feel In Your Heart
I Can See The Way It's Meant To Be
True Love Is Deep
True Love Is Deeper Than The Ocean
I Can Look Into The Future Of The Future
And I Still Get Lost In The Mystery
I Still Get Lost In Your Mystery
I Still Get Lost
I Still Get Lost Inside Your Mystery

Light A Candle Show The Way
Try And Look Around But Try Not To Look Down
You Tightrope Walk Your Way Through Something
It's The Most Precious Moment
And It Dont Mean Nothing

I Dont Know Why You Deny
The Dancefloor Of Your Life
When It Longs To Have You Back

Evan Goodrow Band - One Band One Day One Album

Twenty Four

1. Girls Dance With Girls

A reviewer once asked me "How do I know (during a show) that the audience is starting to respond to original music that they may not be familiar with?" My answer: "Oh, that's easy. When girls start dancing with girls." This song is for all the ladies who love to dance!

Lyrics

1. Girls Dance With Girls

When I Ask You To Dance Baby Don't Say No
Night's Still Young We Got A Way To Go

Get Up Get Down Babe On The Floor
Turn Your Heels Come Back For More

Cut It Loose You Got What Other Girls Want
Band Gets Together Just To Play Your Parts Yeah

Don't Ask Me If Your Mans Around
I'll Drive All Night Just To See You Get Down

Chorus
It's Ok, For Girls To Dance With Girls
Now It's Ok For Girls To Dance With Girls

Guys It's Pretty Clear You Don't Understand
Girls Just Want To Dance Anyway They Can

Darwin Said Nature Finds A Way
Girls Take It On The Dance Floor Today

Guys You Seem A Little To Shy
Better Get Moving Before You're Left Behind

I'm The Man With The Plan Make You Understand
I Want To Make You Dance Anyway I Can

Chorus
It's Ok, For Girls To Dance With Girls
Now It's Ok For Girls To Dance With Girls

2. Sexy Lady

I wrote this one late at night, after a show. You may be able to tell from the lyrics that it was during the summer, and inspired by some late night madness. "I'd like to run naked through your streets" seems to be a favorite line with the sing-along crowd.

Lyrics

2. Sexy Lady

Summertime Has Come Again
Time To Make Some Memories
Baby I Love To Remember When
The Heat It Feels So Good Honey When It Settles In
I'd Like To Run Naked Through Your Streets
Calling Out Your Name Baby So Everyone Can Hear Oh Yeah

Chorus
Sexy Lady
Let Me Take You Downtown
We'll Dance To Hip Hop Till That Night Turns Itself Around
Yeah Yeah Yeah
I Want To Show You
Sexy Lady You've Got My Love Too

Don't Even Need A Reason Why
We All Came Here Tonight To Have A Good Time

It's A Hearty Party We Like To Throw
Come On Boys Callin' All The Sexy Girls You Know

I'd Like To Run Naked Through Your Streets
Calling Out Your Name Baby So Everyone Can Hear Oh Yeah

Chorus
Sexy Lady
Let Me Take You Downtown
We'll Dance To Hip Hop Till That Night Turns Itself Around
Yeah Yeah Yeah
I Want To Show You
Sexy Lady You've Got My Love Too

Repeat Chorus
You've Got My Love Too

3. Song About Love

If this song might be a college course it could be named: The animal nature of sexuality 101.

Lyrics

3. Song About Love

There Won't Be No Hesitating
When Your Body Is There For The Taking
I Want To Hunt You Like An Animal
I Want To Show You My 20,000 Years Of Evolution

I Sing A Song About Love And I'll Rock You Right And I'll Rock You Right
I'll Take You Home In The Middle Of The Night
Say You Want To Go Till The Morning Light
Sing A Song About Love

Chemistry So Complicated
No Need To Be Medicated
Just Want You To Slide A Little Closer
I Want You To Slide A Little Closer
I Want To Move You With You Baby
I Want To Grind With You Lady
I'll Sing A Song About It So The People Know
Just How Far I'm Willing To Go

Chorus
I Sing A Song About Love And I'll Rock You Right And I'll Rock You Right
I'll Take You Home In The Middle Of The Night
Say You Want To Go Till The Morning Light
Sing A Song About Love

Just Can't Seem To Help Myself
Music Has Taken My Soul And My Body
I Just Can't Seem To Help Myself
I've Lost Control

4. When I Come Back to You

Written in about 10 minutes, this one kind of sprang from my creativity, somewhat unexpected, and was
only put together a few days before the "24" recording session.

Lyrics

4. When I Come Back to You

I Know You Come To See Me Go Away
But Baby I Know Things Will Be Ok

Leaving Each Other
When Theres
So Much
Left To Say
Baby I Know Things Will Be Ok

And If You Find I'm Never Far From Your Mind
Just Remember I'm Not So Far Away From You

I'll Always Love You
The Truth Will Always Feel Like New
When Spoken On These Lips
When I Come Back To You

When I Come Back To You

And If You Find Im Never Far From Your Mind
Just Remember Im Not So Far Away From You

I'll Always Love You
The Truth Will Always Feel Like New
When Spoken On These Lips
When I Come Back To You

5. When I Touch You

Written in about 10 minutes, this one kind of sprang from my creativity, somewhat unexpected, and was only put together a few days before the "24" recording session. When I hear this song, I think of "Luckys Lounge" in Boston (Luckys is a late night hang in the South end of Boston) that features live bands. In short, there's a lot of bumping and grinding going on in there on any given night, and I wanted to write something that would "join in" with the general mayhem that was "on display."

Originally written as a simple repetitious funk groove, the song was nothing more than a bit of lyric rap over a pounding rhythm section. So, I would take it home and work on it over the span of a few months (and a few Luckys gigs) and eventually add the chorus, and saxophone solo section. So, this one is dedicated to all the dancing crazies who inspired it.

Lyrics

5. When I Touch You

Your Sexy Body
Rock And Roll Me
So Hot And Bothered
Can't Control Me
Just Like A River
Non-Stop Flowing
I'll Touch Your Skin Baby
Because It's Glowing

Chorus
I Want To Know The Secret
I Want To Know What Gets You Going
I'd Love To Run All The Way To You
Won't You Tell Me What You Want Me To Do
When I Get Close To You
And I Touch You

Your Non-Stop Rhythm
Gonna Hospitalize Me
Its Good To Know That
It's The Way You Like It
All Night Long
Nice And Sloppy
Keep Working It Baby
Until Your Happy
Just Like A Freight Train
Won't Stop Till Morning
I'll Keep It Up Baby
Till The Sun Is Shining

Chorus
Everybodys Telling Me
They Say I'm A Little Crazy When I Talk About You
But They Don't Know Just Like I Know
Just What Happens When I Touch You

This Non-Stop Night
Going To Paralyze Me
It's Good To Know That
It's The Way You Like It
All Night Long
Baby Your Just To Intense
Like Tantric Sex Honey
Better Light Some Incense
Smells Good
Baby Do You Like It?
Smells Good
Baby Do You Like It?

6. Get Back

I think this is one of the most hopeful set of lyrics I've ever written. It's both nostalgic and a sort of call to action involving the future. The chorus is a kind of precautionary (standing in the track of a runaway train), while it leaves you with a message: pick your head up (be proud of all the good you've done).

Maybe I should have just title it "Pro-active positivity 101."

Lyrics

6. Get Back

Woke Up This Morning
And My Whole Life Had Changed
I Was Feeling A Little Lovesick Baby
For The Early Days
Everyone's Got A Lifeline
They Can Hold Onto When The Sea
Gets Rough Again
But Could You Tell Me Baby,
What Kind Of Trouble You Might Be In?

Cause I'll Believe In You If You Think I Could
And If I Asked You To Do The Same For Me I Know You Would (Know You Would)

Chorus
Get Back Standing In The Track Of A Runaway Train
Still Enough Time To Turn Your World On A Dime
Get Back Stand Real Tall
Remember Be Proud Of All The Good You've Done

Positive Vibration Is All You Need
That's What Mr. Bob Marley Gave To Me
Because Feeling Lovesick
Might Bring You Down
You Got To Do What You Can To Pick Yourself Up Off The Ground

Cause I'll Believe In You If You Think I Could
And If I Asked You To Do The Same For Me
I Know You Would

Chorus
Stand Back

7. Been So Long

I actually was writing this one while I was recording the previous record "Fly." Unfortunately it wasn't done in time, but...no worries, it made it onto 24, (and after a good six months of playing in out live). This is still my favorite cut on this record.

Lyrics

7. Been So Long

Don't Mind If I Ride On Your Back A Little While
Lately Life's Been Tough

Been So Hard To Smile Yeah
Been Up For 3 Days Without Stopping
My Mind Keeps Jumping And Hoppin'

I Know I Will Find A Solution
My Mind Sometimes Is Like Negative Pollution

Chorus
Been So Long Since I Ran Away
Been So Long Since I Ran Away
I Can't Remember Why I Didn't Stay (Baby)

Sometimes You Need A Friend To Be A Friend
Someone To Stay With You Till The Very End

I Might Be Lost In A Desert But I'll Stay Right By Your Side
Its A Long Road, I Could Use A Ride

Sometimes We All Need A Little Help From Above
Dont Be Confused This Ain't A Song About Love

Chorus
I Say Walking Alone Ain't The Easiest Way
Sometimes It's The Only Way

Evan Goodrow Band - Fly

Fly

1. You You You

This song was written for someone I was close to but had no real future with. And there was a pain that we wouldn't be able to stay together because we had different dreams. Ahh, the pains of being young and in love. So, this is a serenade of sorts. And this song, is really about intimacy. "I thought I was someone else, until you turned around and showed me myself." To me, this is true intimacy: When another is able to show us something about ourselves that we didn't know or understand because it isn't necessarily obvious.

Lyrics

1. You You You

Ive Been Stuck Here On The Phone
And I Know Your Feeling Alone
I Won't Let You Down
I'll Listen To You All Night Long

Ive Been Trying To Get It Right
And At The End Of Every Night
The Tears Fall From My Face
And They Show Me The Way To Go Home

You You You
You You You
We Got A Lot In Common
We Don't Know
Whats Going To Happen Tomorrow

You You You
You You You You Keep On Singing
You Give Your Dreams A Chance
You Give Them A Chance To Run Free

Ive Been With You Baby And I've Been Alone
Black And White
Right And Wrong
And I'll Still Be Here To Tell The Story
Even When The Time Has Gone

I Thought I Was Someone Else
Until You Turned Around
Showed Me Myself
And I'm Grateful Grateful Grateful Baby
I'm Telling Everyone About You

You You You
You You You
We Got A Lot In Common
We Don't Know
Whats Going To Happen Tomorrow

You You You
You You You You Keep On Singing
You Give Your Dreams A Chance
You Give Them A Chance To Run Free

Musical Notes
After a period of writing a lot of songs that were more harmonically advanced, lot's of chords and twists and turns in the rhythms, I was chasing the idea of a reduced chord and song form. This song is a basic 5 chord sequence that repeats throughout the song for both lyrics and chorus. Even the chorus is a somewhat reductionist experiment (no rhymes, just a repeated word). The chord sequence: A-7, FMaj7, E7#9, D7 (9), A-7

2. There's No Reason

People sing sad songs, not because it makes them feel sad, but because they know that they're not alone. "There's no reason" is a break up song, plain and simple. And it's one persons view. Still, there's a hopeful plea in there somewhere. Maybe things could have turned out different. "There's no reason that I couldn't be the man you wanted me to be." "Why do you come back baby when I sing this song? Don't you know that this song is not for you, it's for me."

Lyrics

2. There's No Reason

I Suppose You Never Want To See My Face Again
I Suppose You Want To Tell Our Story To All Your Friends And The Friends
And The Friends Of The Friends
And There's No Reason
Hey Baby For You To Walk
All Over Me
For You To Go Home
And Feel Lonely

Where Did You Go Baby
And What Were You Thinking?
Were You Making Some Serious Changes?
Or Were You Drinking?

And There's No Reason
Hey Baby For You To Walk
All Over Me
There's No Reason
I Couldn't Be The Man
That You Wanted Me To Be
That You Wanted Me To Be

Why Do You Come Back Baby
When I Sing This Song
Don't You Know This Song Is Not For You
It's For Me
We Can Try, Try, Try We Can Try To Do It Again
But I Don't Want To Go Back
To The Way Things You Used To Be

And There's No Reason
Hey Baby For You To Walk
All Over Me
There's No Reason
I Couldn't Be The Man
That You Wanted Me To Be
(That You Wanted Me To Be)

Musical Notes
This is one of my favorite sax solos. Boston saxophone player Mario Perrett immediately hooked in with this song. This was his first take. I like the layering on this one. The shaker (there from the beginning), along with the organ, and two different orchestrated guitar parts. Add background vocals, extra percussion, and rhodes, and well...it's thick! The low guitar line at the beginning is one of those instantly recognizable things (comes in handy during the live show!).

3. Gettup

This is an anti-music industry song if I ever wrote one. "Who wants to spend their time standing in someone else's line?" Ticketmaster anyone? Don't confuse this as an "anti-rock n' roll song (I'm all for it, I just don't see it's spirit alive and well in 2008!) I could get into a whole corporate rock rant here, but I won't. There's enough criticism in the world already, and anyone who wants to know why the "industry" has unfolded the way it has over the past 10 years has more than likely already read up on the subject.

What's happened to rock and roll? Watch Cameron Crowes film "Almost famous" and listen to Lester Bangs character explain it's death to a young Cameron Crowe.

"I want a new music that says something"

"Cant you see the way I want to be I want to set the whole world free hope it that doesn't sound too lazy cause its alright i got the whole night just to do it right"

Maybe ask yourself: What is it about Rock N'Roll, that made it, (or makes it) what it is? Is it about trying to set people free? (I want to set the whole world free) Is it about escaping time? (It's alright I got the whole night, just to do it right)

"Long after I'm dead and gone the music just keeps playing on" I think Jim Morrison might agree with me, that this statement captures the true spirit of rock and roll.

Lyrics

3. Gettup

Rock N Roll Used To Satisfy My Soul
Now It Don't Give Me Nothing
What's On My Mind Is One Of A Kind
A New Music That Says Something
You See Baby It's Like Who Knows Today
Who Might Be Coming After You
Long After I'm Dead And Gone Music Just Keeps Playing On
So Dance With Me Do Just Like I Do

Can't You See The Way I Want To Be
I Want To Set The Whole World Free
Hope It That Doesn't Sound Lazy
Because It's Alright I Got The Whole Night
Just To Do It Right
Makes You Want To Gettup, Get On The Floor
Roll It Over Till They Beg For More
Who Wants To Spend Their Time Standing In Someone Elses Line?

Can You Feel The Groove?
Been There Since Genesis
It's The Best Way I Know How To Free Myself
Lets Not Mess Around With What I'm Puttin Down
What Ive Got Is The Most Honest Word In Town
You See Baby It's Like Who Knows Today
Who Might Be Coming After You
Long After I'm Dead And Gone Music Just Keeps Playing On
So Dance With Me Do Just Like I Do

Makes You Want To Gettup, Get On The Floor
Roll It Over Till They Beg For More
Who Wants To Spend Their Time Standing In Someone Elses Line?

I've been told by many fans that this is the best guitar solo that I've recorded. Thus far! *)

4. Blues Blues Blues

Still the best blues tune that I've ever penned (I think so anyway). And, yes, it's a break-up song (Can't have enough of these in the modern age right?). This one shows the direct impact that New Orleans music had on me. And even though I had notions of getting away from blues music in general (that is, traditional blues), when the band started performing this one, people where instantly tapping their feet and singing along with it. And, I fell in love with it, again: This was written almost three years before I recorded it.

So, you could say I pulled it off the shelf, dusted it off, and tried to make the best of it. Blues Piano Extraordinaire Bob Malone happened to be in town while we were recording, heard some of the roughs (that's what they call unfinished songs in the studio), and asked to play on it. And, his N'arlins piano work here is fantastic. And of course, Mario Perrett played his butt off on the sax solo. (Listen for the "Pardon me senorita" in the background during the solo). A beautiful senorita is probably the only thing in the world that might interrupt Mario from a solo anyhow.

Lyrics

4. Blues Blues Blues

Hey Baby Don't Say A Word
There Aint Nothing You Can Say That Will Change My Mood
Ive Been Confused Slightly Amused
And I've Got The Blues Blues Blues Over You

Sometimes I Can't Keep From Crying
And Your Leaving Lord Makes Me Feel Like Dying Dying
Ive Been Confused Slightly Amused
And I've Got The Blues Blues Blues Over You

You Don't Want Me No More Take Your Things
Leave Through The Door
Ive Been Abused, Honey I'm Still So Confused
And I've Got The Blues Blues Blues Over You

Sometimes I Can't Keep From Crying
And Your Leaving Lord Makes Me Feel Like Dying Dying
Ive Been Confused Slightly Amused
And I've Got The Blues Blues Blues Over You

Sometimes I Can't Keep From Crying
And Your Leaving Lord Makes Me Feel Like Dying Dying
Ive Been Confused Slightly Amused
And I've Got The Blues Blues Blues Over You

I Didn't Think It Would End This Way
I Would Trade All My Tomorrows Just For One Yesterday
Ive Been Abused, Honey I'm So Confused
And I've Got The Blues Blues Blues Over You

If You Want To Come Back To Me I Will Do My Best To Make You See
How Much I Love
Ive Been Confused Slightly Amused
And I've Got The Blues Blues Blues Over You

Musical Notes
Starting out in clubs (before the age of 20), I spent a lot of time playing in blues bands. And these bands had a similar repertoire of what could be reffered to as "the best, or most well known blues standards":The "Mustang Sallys," and the "Stormy Mondays," of the blues world. Now, as much as I identify with blues music, (people have argued that I've never "escaped it" soundwise -whatever that's supposed to mean right?), I have always endevoured to be more than cliche, and musically, that just boils down to trying to be different. "Blues, blues, blues" is different in the sense that it's not a traditional 12-bar blues at all, but a New Orleans influenced 16-bar blues form.

5. I Can See

"I can see" was written in a moment of clarity that was inspired by a love of mine (that will go unnamed here), sometime in February 2003. At the time I was wrestling with ideas about romantic love (or what some refer to as "true love") and trying to find an answer to what it consists of. And so, as I sat at a window watching an afternoon snowfall it occurred to me that there exists a deeper spirituality underneath romantic ventures, and that had more to do with vision and perception than anything else. We see ourselves through our lovers eyes. (Take a moment and think hard about this).

I really do believe that. There was a moment when I really felt (not thought) but actually felt that True Love was deeper that the ocean. And I believe it. No matter how deep you go, there is always more beyond your perception of things. And there's always a mystery.

She gave me this gift of insight (even though she was miles away at work on a Monday morning), simply because she was with me, and because there was a mystery in our feelings for each other (I hope you can relate). I would always get "lost in her mystery" *meaning that there would always be an unexplainable connection that I would have with her that I would never be able to fully comprehend. The song was the dawn of a new perception of "us" (at least for me). And so, the lyrics explain a newfound vision of our relationship.

"The dancefloor is still there for those who want more" The dancefloor mention is a metaphor for living life to it's full extent. Most people shrink from living their lives fully (they whisper dreams) while others live it differently (they say it loud). Dancing is a "metaphor" for "doing". And anyone can choose to dance at any time, right? (It should be noted that this is a notion both grand and broad and really has nothing to do with music but with any sort of discipline, devotion and reward that a person may choose to seek or hide from in their lives). The metaphor is important because it stresses that the "Dancefloor is still there," and the hinge point of the line is that you have to "want more."

Want more of what you might ask? For me? Wanting more is about wanting to live a better life, be a better person, and grow rich with experience. And in my personal case that happens to mean writing and performing music. What does it mean to you? Here's one of my favorite Joseph Campbell quotes:

The ultimate mystery of being is beyond all categories of thought. As Kant said, the thing in itself is no thing. It transcends thingness, it goes past anything that could be thought. The best things can't be told because they transcend thought. The second best are misunderstood, because those are the thoughts that are supposed to refer to that which can't be thought about. The third best are what we talk about. (Joseph Campbell, interview with Bill Moyers, transcribed in The Power of Myth, p. 49

Lyrics

5. I Can See

Your Loving Eyes They Hypnotize
Pick Me Up And I Forget About The Floor
Dont Whisper Dreams
But Say Them Loud
The Dancefloor Is Still There
For Those Who Want More

Hey Baby You're Looking So Good
Now Its Time For You And Me To Get Together

I Can See The Way Its Meant To Be You Call It Serendipity
But It's A Decision
Just Like A Lost Language No One Speaks
Something Inside Tells You That You Can Touch The Sky
Hey Baby You're Looking So Fine
Now Its Time To Put The Pieces Together

I Can See For Miles Around Me
I Can Know Just What You Feel In Your Heart

I Can See The Way It's Meant To Be
True Love Is Deep Deep Deep As The Ocean
I Can Look Into The Future Of The Future
And I Still Get Lost In Your Mystery
I Still Get Lost
I Still Get Lost
I Still Get Lost Inside Your Mystery

Light A Candle Show The Way
Look Around But Try Not To Look Down
You Tightrope Walk Your Way Through Something
It's Your Most Precious Moment And It Don't Mean Nothing
I Dont Know Why You Deny
The Dancefloor Of Your Life
When It Longs To Have You Back

I Can See For Miles Around Me
I Can Know Just What You Feel In Your Heart

I Can See The Way It's Meant To Be
True Love Is Deep Deep Deep As The Ocean
I Can Look Into The Future Of The Future
And I Still Get Lost In Your Mystery
I Still Get Lost I Still Get Lost
I Still Get Lost Inside Your Mystery
I Can See

Loving Eyes They Hypnotize Pick Me Up And I Forget About The Floor
Dont Wisper Dreams But Say Them Loud Dancefloor Is Still
There For Those Who Want More

Baby These Days Your Looking So Good
And Now Its Time For You And Me To Get Together

I Can See The Way Its Meant To Be You Call It Serendipity
But Its A Decision
A Lost Language No One Speaks
Something In You Knows You Can Touch The Sky
You Look Like Your Doing All Right
Now Its Time To Put The Pieces Together

I Can See For Miles Around Me
I Can Know What You Feel In Your Heart
I Can See What Its Meant To Be
True Love Is Deep Deep Deep As The Ocean
I Can Look Into The Future Of The Future
And Still Be Lost In The Mystery
Lost In The Mystery

Light A Candle Show The Way Look Around But Try Not To Look Down
You Tightrope Walk Your Way Through Something
The Most Precious Moment And At The Same Time It Dont Mean Nothing

I Dont Know Why You Deny
The Dancefloor Of Your Life
And It Longs To Have You Back

6.Out Of Control

"Out of control" was written in a fit of depression. A lot of shit was not going right, I was pretty down, and the writing was the only thing that brought me out of it. Looking back, I hear a lot of Hendrix in the music, and a bit of Dylan in the poetry. But I wasn't thinking those things when I wrote it. I just jotted it down in a haze. And in the end, I smiled. I suppose that's why we create?

Lyrics

6.Out Of Control

I Went Searching For Redemption
When All My Hope Fell Right Through The Floor
Hitch A Ride On The Wind
You Told Me That You Don't Want Me Anymore

Out Of Control
But I'm Still Behind The Wheel
Feels Like I've Got A Whole Lot Of Nothing
In A World Full Of Everything

What Does It Mean To Be Alive?
She Said, The Same Thing It Means To Breathe Or Die
We See Each Other On The River
But That Rivers Gone Just Like The Current Of Your Love

Out Of Control
But I'm Still Behind The Wheel
Feels Like I've Got A Whole Lot Of Nothing
In A World Full Of Everything

Here I Go Again Into The Lost Dreams Of Memories
I Might Never Have A Home
When You're Near Your Look Is Not The Same
And My Love Is So Real I Can't Even Speak Your Name

Out Of Control
But I'm Still Behind The Wheel
Feels Like I've Got A Whole Lot Of Nothing
In A World Full Of Everything

(World Full Of Everything)

7. Fly

I've recorded very few instrumentals on any of these records. Actually, I think this is the only one. Ok, so, this is the only instrumental that I've recorded on an EGB record. (I've played as a sideman on many other instrumental records). Sometimes I get what I call the "critical" songwriting question (either from fans or in interviews). Ready? Ok. Here t'is. (drumroll please...)

What do you write first, the music or the lyrics? (It's a doozy huh?) For me, the answer is lyrics. I have a musical brain. If you're talking to me, and I hear music playing somewhere, chances are I just stopped listening to you. And that's not by choice. It's just the way that I'm made. So...I have to write lyrics first. (Adding music to them is pretty simple for me). And of course, I didn't really have to write many words for this one right?

8. It's Probably Me

I've always admired Sting. I think he's both a brilliant lyricist and a brilliant musician, and someone who has been able to bridge the gap between writing music that is both "pop" and "meaningful." In my opinion, this is a difficult thing, as "pop music" today seems to be such a disposable entertainment vehicle, that doesn't stand the test of time. Stings music just stands up to long-term listening. And in the end, I find it quite meaningful. This is a fabulous song about friendship, and I had been using it in the live show for about a year before we recorded it, and I had gone on a suggestion from a close friend to include it on a CD.

Due to legalities, I can't post the lyrics here, although I would suggest just googling them: (try the artist along with the title of the song).

Musical Notes
I tend to be very critical about my guitar playing. It's normal for me to...how do I say this?..."not be very excited?" about my own playing. I'm always thinking about how it could be better, and that's still the prime motivation behind constantly practicing and trying to "better it." That being said, I have to say, I still enjoy the guitar playing on this track. I changed some of the music. Stings original verse form is A-7 to D and then back to Em. I substituted a B-7 for the D in this progression, making it a bit more dark.

9. You Don't Know What Love Is

This song is a conversation that I was having with myself while on the road to NYC from Boston for a show. I was in the throes of a nasty separation at the time (with someone who will go anonymous for now), and more importantly there had been an explosive verbal battle earlier that very day. I found myself in the back of the band van, angry, a bit confused, and maybe just plain sad at the way things were unfolding in the relationship. And, on my way to a show. I started writing as I usually do, very random free association, abstract, blah blah.

I was disorientated at the divorce and in the course of the "back and forth" even felt attacked and accused at times "Evan you don't know what love is" (yes, surprisingly enough, I heard that one). Stormy stuff. And so, I started pondering what it meant to know what love is. How does one know right? And so, I started to write some dark shit. And It was too dark. So, I decided to try looking at myself from a third person perspective. Thus, I'm sort of singing to myself. The metaphor of the pouring rain is sort of the essence of the thing, "you don't know what love is, till you know what pain is." There's that yin/yang balance of the universe coming around.

The first verse is really about desperation. Living your life in a sort of unconscious hell. And trying to wake up from it. "Someone was looking for love today" is waking up.

"It's easier to look the other way." Looking the other way for me, would have been to just not write the song.

The second verse is a literal depiction of what happened between one of my crew and one night stand that VERY night in NY. Yes, it's a true story. Later when I was trying to fit the "story" together it just made so much sense.

The third verse. The dilemma. In the first verse, we have desired to break out of the "ordinary life." In the second verse we;ve done that by letting our hormones run loose in NYC. The third verse is about trying to "heal the ordeal." "I locked myself out, without a key, a man alone in a big big city."

Lyrics

9. You Don't Know What Love Is

Truth On Truth Don't Tell No Lies
Some Men Like To Fantasize
Thinkin' About Their Ordinary Lives
You Only Got A Small Time To Be Alive
Get In Touch Just Like A Magic Way
Someone Was Looking For Love Today
Some Hearts Are Caring Some Things Are Still Worth Sharing
Its Easier To Look The Other Way
Listen To These Words I Say

You Don't Know What Love Is
You Don't Know What Love Is
You Don't Know What Love Is
Until You're Walking On The Street In The Pouring Rain

Spent The Weekend In New York City
The Drinks Were Many And Those Girls Were So Pretty
It's Hard To Say Who Said What To Who
Nothing But A Guy And A Girl Looking For A Room
Three Hours And The Sky Got Bright
That Couple Had Walked All Through The Night
Something Went Wrong Some Things Never Go Right
It's Hard To Ask For More When You're Passed Out On The Floor

Chorus
I Don't Know What's Supposed To Happen Next
Some Things In Life Are Better Than Sex
I Can't Even Tell You About The Days Gone By
Just The Look In Your Eye
Your Silhouette Against The Sky
I Locked Myself Out
Without A Key
A Man Alone In A Big Big City
Now My Heart Beats Fast And With It Comes The Pain
Now I Got To Stand Out Here In This Pouring Rain

10. Find My Way Back Home

I wanted to include a very rootsy, blues tune on Fly. I also wanted it to be different from anything else on the record (perhaps that's why I initially did this on the acoustic guitar). And so, I asked Phil (drummer boy) to play the whole thing with brushes and we aimed for a "low production" sort of thing. Basic blues groove, basic "tell it like it is" lyrics. This idea, "Find my way back home" means a lot of things and on a lot of levels. Check out the long slow version on "EGBLIVE."

Lyrics

10. Find My Way Back Home

Time For Loving Is The Right Time
Make Sure You're Looking For Me Honey
Calling Out Your Name As I Drive Over The Hills
I'm Coming Home And I'm Bringing You All My Magic Thrills
I'm Going To Find My Way Back Home

Baby, Its Been A Long Time
And Your Looking Finer All The Time
If Your Love Is Good For Me, Then I'll Be Good To You
We'll Show The Neighbors Just What Love Can Do
When I Find My Way Back Home

I Know You'll Be Missing Me When Im Gone
Here I Come My Headlights Are Pointed Towards Home
Nothing Like A Little Music To Make You Feel Alright
I Got What It Take To Rock You Through The Night
Im Going To Find My Way Back Home

Musical Notes
This one is a s simple blues riff in A. I use a C7(9) to a G7(9) on the chorus. "Blues ain't nothing but a feelin!" -John Lee Hooker

Gettup

1. Brothers and Sisters

Brothers and sisters was one of the first songs that I ever wrote. It went through a lot of modifications and changes before it ended it up
on "Gettup!" So, fans may remember different versions, depending on when they heard it performed. Hopefully they favored this version!

Lyrics

1. Brothers and Sisters

I've Got Something
In My Oven
Always Thinking
Never Sleeping
And Where You Are
It's Never That Far

Brothers And Sisters
I Can't Wait Till You Home
And You Call Me
And You Use Your Own Cell Phone

Ain't No Need To
Kill Nobody
The Religion Is A Fixin
They Want The Money And The Honey
So I'll Tell You Honey

Brothers And Sisters
I Can't Wait Till You Home
And You Call Me
And You Use Your Own Cell Phone

2. Coming Back Home

Growing up.
This one's all about growing up and how much our perception changes as we do. What we think is "home" when we're children, and what we think of it as adults.

The Datsun Tragedy
I remember being quite young (maybe four or so) and having a feeling of home in the family car (a blue datsun stationwagon) and the horrific terror that I went through when it was being traded in. For me, that car WAS home. It's so funny for me to look back on it now and remember how "broken" I was when it was gone.

Perhaps it made me crazy (check out the last verse).

"Home" has changed for me (as I'm sure it does for every human being on the planet) so much in my life, and I have found a peace in the realization of the saying "home is where the heart is." I think this really is the truth. And although this song is nostalgic (and somewhat sad) rest assured, I was probably still mourning the Datsun.

Lyrics

2. Coming Back Home

There Are Flowers In The Garden
They Grin So Pretty To Me
No Worries About Getting Water
The Clouds Always Come Back
Take Care Of Them

When I Drive Through This Old Town
And I Think About What It Used To Be Before
When We Were Children The World Was Larger
And We Had A Place That We Could Call Our Home

I'm Coming Back Home
I Can't Say What Happened To Me Here
Because I Don't Completely Understand
When You Go Back Home And Everything Is So Different
That's When You Know Your In Another Land

My Old Friends They Blow Me Kisses
They Don't Have To Turn Around So They Can See
Just How Crazy I May Be Looking
Or Just How Crazy I Might Be
Crazy I Might Be

3. Last Time

This was real evidence as to what musical direction I would eventually take. This is by far, the most funkiest tune on this record. Lyrically, I was trying to capture that "end of the night" feeling, when you're on the dancefloor, and you know it's the last song, and you just want to keep it going all night long. You know the feeling (or at least I hope you do!)

Lyrics

3. Last Time

There Was A Song I Used To Know
I Used To Sing It Baby Everyday
This Song I Know You Used To Know
I Used To Sing It Baby On
Your Birthday

They Say The Past Is Past But Not Far Behind
You Got To Let Your Body Free Your Mind
Hope It's Not The Last Time
Hope It's Not The Last Time

Oh Babe Can You Sing Me One More Song
Before The Night Is Over
Radio Man Going To Make It So That The Dance Never Ends
I Hope It's Not The Last Time We See Each Other
Because I Don't Think I Could Live Another Minute Without Loving You One More Time

Love Has Come But You Have Gone
The Song It Just Keeps Playing On
Who Knows If It's The Last Time Too
I May Be Here Honey Dancing With You

They Say The Past Is Past But Not Far Behind
You Got To Let Your Body Free Your Mind
Hope It's Not The Last Time
Hope It's Not The Last Time

Oh Babe Can You Sing Me One More Song
Before The Night Is Over
Radio Man Going To Make It So That The Dance Never Ends
I Hope It's Not The Last Time We See Each Other
Because I Don't Think I Could Live Another Minute Without Loving You One More Time

4. Superstition (Stevie Wonder)

We've been playing this one for years (I mean, it's one of the most recognizable Stevie Wonder tunes on the planet), and for good reason. It's still a great tune, and I wanted to change it in my own way.
That's a fretless bass that's sliding all over the place for those of you who might be hearing that. Hammond wizard Ken Clark lends his organ playing as well to the arrangement, and I still think the whole thing came out sounding great. I had asked drummer Steve Rose to play a New Orleans feel on the drums, and although that's a pretty vague direction (considering there are quite a few cliche drum niches that I could have been referring to) he knew what I wanted before I did.

Due to legalities, I can't post the lyrics here, although I would suggest just googling them: (try the artist along with the title of the song).

5. You and I

Lyrics

5. You and I

5. You and I

You And I
We Got Something
We Got Something The Whole World Needs To See
You And I
We've Always Had It It's Only Now We Discovered
How Good It's Supposed To Be

You And I
It Took Awhile
To Find Each Other I'll Tell You Just What We're Going To Do Life Is Changing Both Night And Day
Let's Stay Together
Is The Only Words I Say

And If You Think About The Future
Don't Waste Your Time Thinking About That
When You're Love Stands In Front Of You
Tell Me What Are You Going To Do When It's The Truth
You're Going To Join Her
You're Going To Join

You And I
You And I
You And I

It Doesn't A Genius To Figure Out If Your Doing It Right
It Don't Take No Professin'
Some People Really Belong Together
There's No Mistaking Just What They Feel Inside
And If You Think About The Future
Don't Waste Your Time Thinking About That
When You're Love Stands In Front Of You
Tell Me What Are You Going To Do When It's The Truth
You're Going To Join Her
You're Going To Join

You And I
You And I
You And I

6. Making Love In the World

Inspired by Al Green, I wrote this one in a "glass case of emotion." Written for, and dedicated to A.S.

Lyrics

6. Making Love In the World

Said Baby Do You Want To Talk
I'm Here So Don't Turn Away
I Came Here Just Because I Want To Be With You Every Night
And Every Day

So Don't You Think That You're The Only One
Between The Two Of Us Who's In Love With The Other
Because When I Search I Find
A Woman Who's In Her Right Mind
For Making Love In The World
For Making Love In The World

If There's A Will There's A Way
It's Like My Mama Always Used To Tell Me
We Can Be Together If We Want To
All We Got To Do Is Try

So Don't You Think That You're The Only One
Between The Two Of Us Whos In Love With The Other
Because When I Search I Find
A Woman Who's In Her Right Mind
For Making Love In The World
For Making Love In The World

I'll Reach Out To You
If You Want Me To

Cause I Don't Mind Baby

8. No Cream In My Coffee

Lyrics

8. No Cream In My Coffee

Ain't Got No Cream In My Coffee
Ain't Got No Honey In My Tea
Ain't Got No Time For Worrying
On Little Drinks Such As These

You Say It's So Hard To Gettup
After You've Been Down For Such A Long Long Time
I Only Know Because I've Been There
So You Can Save You're Crying

And If You Ain't Got No Lips To Suck On
Ain't Got A Match To Light The Fire
Ain't Got No Time For Wastin'
On These Little Problems With Your Life

You Say It's So Hard To Gettup
After You've Been Down For Such A Long Long Time
I Only Know Because I've Been There
So You Can Save You're Crying

And If You Ain't Got No Lips To Suck On
Ain't Got A Match To Light The Fire
Ain't Got No Time For Wastin'
On These Little Problems With Your Life

9. Black Bra

I have to tell you, I don't have a black bra fetish or anything like that. Truth is, often times, I'll write humorous material (or at least stuff I find funny) and I use it as a good writing exercise. Don't get me wrong, It's not a question of whether or not I take myself seriously (because I do), it's more matter of keeping things in perspective. Anyone who knows me, knows that I have quite an odd sense of humor, but also knows that humor for me is a vital ingredient in this life for any sense of happiness.

And so, I give you "Black Bra." Is it a song about temptation? Maybe just about plain ole sex? You decide.

Lyrics

9. Black Bra

Black Bra
You Know She's Got One On
Black Bra
I Don't Think That I'm That Strong
Black Bra
Honey Don't Put It Away
I've Still Got Something To Say About Your
Black Bra
Coming Down The Corridor
Black Bra
She Knows That I Want Some More
Black Bra
Let Desire Lead Where It May
Black Bra Is Here To Stay

Musical Notes
Check out the solo on the end of this one. It's wah wah pedal baby, all the way!

10. Sunrise

Lyrics

10. Sunrise

I Watch The Sunrise
And I Watch It Come Over The Sea
I Watch The Sunrise
And I Feel It Coming For Me
I Cannot Hold It Back
I Watch It Carry Away The Black
Is This Really The End Of The Night
Because When I Go To Sleep
This May Be The Final Time
I See Anything So Beautiful

You Cannot Stop It Now
The World Is Set In Motion Although Most People Don't How
The Sun Is Rising And The Shadows Are On The Run

I Watch The Sunrise
And I Watch It Come Over The Sea
I Watch The Sunrise
And I Feel It Coming For Me

11. I Just Want To Make Love To You

This was originally a Willie Dixon thing, and it's been interpreted many different ways. I have to confess, I think I put it on the end "Gettup," because when I was listening back to the mixes (during the final stages of production) I was least happiest with it from all the others. There was something about it when it was recorded. We had been playing it live and it had sounded really good, and it just sort of lost gas when we recorded it (at least in my opinion). Just being honest.

Due to legalities, I can't post the lyrics here, although I would suggest just googling them: (try the artist along with the title of the song).

1. I Need Your Love

It seems fitting that the first song that I ever recorded (on my own and as a bandleader) was a cover of "I need your love so bad," a song that I had been listening to B.B.King sing since I was thirteen. The song, the lyrics, and the style, had always been so important to me. If you go back and find B.B.'s version, you'll see that I juiced everything up considerably (a faster tempo, more guitar fills, well, just more of everything. And like every young blues inspired guitar player, I felt that I had something to prove.

Ten years later, after opening for B.B. I would be sitting on his bus with him alone, after the show, and this song came to mind. I told him about it, and he smiled at me, most likely remembering his recording session for it (1964?), and admitted to me that it had always been one of his favorites as well.

Due to legalities, I can't post the lyrics here, although I would suggest just googling them: (try the artist along with the title of the song).
